American Character is also available on Amazon, through the links at right, as are the two culinary histories I have published. One of them, Vintage California Cuisine, has a Lummis connection. A chapter in the book tells the story of, and includes several dozen recipes from, the cookbook Lummis helped assemble and publish in 1903, the Landmark Clubs Cook Book. A fundraiser for one of Lummis’s many causes, restoring neglected Spanish missions, it is regarded as one of the first English language cookbooks to chronicle the emergence of a distinctive American cuisine in the Southwest, infused with chiles and other flavors of Mexico and Spanish America.
I am not immersed in Southwestern history full-time. Though I return for frequent visits to Los Angeles, where I lived for many years, I now live outside of Philadelphia, working as an associate editor at Current History magazine, published by the University of California Press.
